Not many people understand what it takes to become a licensed dental hygienist. We have a national written boards that takes 8 hours to complete (in one sitting mind you), a jurisprudence test of the state we are getting licensed in, the process of care test (another written test covering patient care, treatment planning, and knowledge of evaluating health histories), and finally the clinical board (WREB) where we have to find our own patient that has what seems like a million specific qualifications including very heavy tarter buildup and clean their teeth in a very short time frame. Oh, and complete the obscene amount of requirements with teachers demanding perfection in our 2 year program. And the hardest part about dental hygiene school is the fact that my grade is dependent on other people- our patients, who are not always reliable. I will not miss recieving a call the morning of the appointment from my patient saying they can't come in, and then furiously calling through lists of people to see if they will come in last minute.
2 years of undergrad classes and 2 years of dental hygiene school all hinge on the successful completion of these 4 tests, which in total is costing me about 2,000 to take. So far I have passed the first 3 and next Sunday I will attempt to pass the most important one, my clinical boards. We find out the results about 3 weeks after and I have a feeling that will seem like forever.
Isaac is also taking WREB next weekend to get licensed as a dentist, so any good vibes, thoughts and prayers are welcomed on our behalf :)
